My story
From Johannesburg to Kfar Saba
I grew up in Johannesburg, where English was the language of home, school and everyday life. Before making aliyah, I spent 12 years as head of mathematics at a South African school that reached a 100% maths pass rate.
When I came to Israel, I brought two things with me: a deep knowledge of English and a real passion for teaching. I started out at Berlitz, but soon realised I could get better results for students by working with them independently, one on one. I hold a master's degree and a doctorate in education, and have been teaching in Israel for more than 20 years.
Every lesson is built around the student. Some come to me finding it hard to read a single paragraph. Others are aiming for a top grade in the 5-point Bagrut. One of my students started high school at 3 points and finished at 5. Another, who sometimes finds studying hard, scored 100.
Every student of mine who has sat the English Bagrut has taken it at 5 points and scored between 90 and 100. What I'm proudest of is what comes after: students who read in English for pleasure, speak with confidence, and go on to study and work in English. English they keep for life.

Approach
How the lessons work
45 minutes, three parts
About 15 minutes each on grammar, language and vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
Taught in English
English is my mother tongue. I teach through explanation, conversation, practice, demonstrations and games.
A clear path
Each lesson starts with homework and questions, then moves through the Eric Cohen books at the student's pace, with about 30 minutes of homework a week.
Patience, warmth and humour
A clear framework and plenty of encouragement, so every child succeeds and leaves the lesson with a smile.
